About the event
For NZ Music Month the Charlotte Museum Te Whare Takatātpui-Wāhine o Aotearoa are celebrating Lesbian Sapphic Musicians of The Past and Present
The ‘Past and Present’ concert at the Grey Lynn Library Hall, 474 Great North Road, Grey Lynn.
Saturday May 11th 2024 from 7:00pm
The museum is hosting an evening of live music paying tribute to the lesbian sapphic musicians of previous generations. Taking inspiration from the seminal collective album 'Out of The Corners' released in 1982, we have gathered a new collective of talented lesbian sapphic musicians to put their spin on music from the past. We wish to honour the work and dedication of the lesbian wāhine who paved the path to make the Aotearoa music scene more inclusive and accessible.
‘Past and Present’ showcases a variety of songs written by influential musicians and activists such Mahinaarangi Tocker, Val Murphy, Lynda Topp, Di Cadwallader, Jess Hawk Oakenstar, Jools Topp, Hattie St John, Mereana Pitman, Tracy Huirama, Clare Bear, and Hilary King.
Our new generation of talented musicians include Britta Hamill, Eden Iris, Evelyn Fletcher-Jenkins, Holly Dove, Kim Halliday, Marissa Holder, Samara Alofa, Sarah Radford, and Sophie Sutherland who all hail from different musical backgrounds.
‘Past and Present’ highlights the creativity, collaboration, connection, and empowerment of music for our diverse lesbian sapphic communities. The incredible talent of each composer and performer combines to create a once in a lifetime night of music that illustrates the power of community and intergenerational connection. Come along and be a part of this amazing evening celebrating the ‘Past and Present’.
